Veterans Memorials

Veterans Memorials

Many Roughriders have chosen the path of the military in their post high school life, and many of those young adults did not return home. The intent of these memorial projects are to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and express our gratitude for their service.

Memorial Video

This video project was created by our Veterans Committee after nearly a decade of research, with additional updates added in May 2023. This is an ongoing project. If you have corrections or know of any additional information, please email the committee at veterans@rooseveltalumni.org.

Memorial Garden

The first three memorials were originally placed in the courtyard behind the main building, in a location of solitude and reflection, where students could pause for a moment of thought as they passed on their way to class. When the campus remodel began in 2015, these memorials were carefully stored and safeguarded so they could be displayed again in the future.

After the reconstruction was completed, the RHSAA, in conjunction with the current school administration, selected the location of this community garden as a final resting place for these memorials. In recent years this garden has flourished with vegetation and other tokens of memory, and will remain a very central and public space on campus for years to come.

The Veterans Memorials are located to the right in this photo, in the community garden in front of the old auditorium building.

The Veterans Memorials are located to the right in this photo, on the circular gathering pad in the center of the community garden.

Fallen Alumni Memorial

Fallen Alumni

Donated by the Alumni Association, 2025

This granite memorial was placed in 2025 to honor the 39 Roosevelt alumni who were killed as a result of their military service. Names are grouped by conflict: World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War, and a final section for those who died due to their service. Within each section, names appear in order of Roosevelt class year, with their graduation year listed beside them. Several of these alumni left school early to enlist, and some were killed before they would have earned their diplomas.

This project fulfills a long-standing goal of the Alumni Association to ensure every fallen Roughrider is remembered by name. The memorial was made possible through support from the Classes of 1940, 1947, 1962, and 1999, along with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1. The memorial was designed with space for additional names, should future research uncover more or should future loss occur. It stands as a permanent tribute to the sacrifices made by members of the Roosevelt community.

All Veterans Memorial

Veterans and Families

Donated by the Alumni Association, 2018

This stone was placed in 2018 when the previous three memorials were moved to their new location. The intent behind this memorial was to honor a much broader group of veterans, including but not limited to: those who have served in any war such as those who served more recently, those who attended but did not graduate from Roosevelt, and the families who lost their children in these wars.

This memorial was part of a large project by the Alumni Association with help from many other groups: The Blue Star and Gold Star Mothers, OM Memorial Company, and many of our local veterans organizations. A group of students also helped in this project, ensuring the stone was placed with care and remains well maintained.

Gulf War Memorial

Gulf War

Donated by the Class of 1991

This stone was a class gift, donated at the time of the Class of 1991’s graduation. The war was ongoing, and while no Roosevelt alumni had been killed in action at that time, many students had family members and classmates who were serving. The impact of the conflict felt immediate and personal, moving the class to choose a memorial as their senior gift to the school.

The project was led entirely by students, who raised the necessary funds and coordinated the effort themselves. Their goal was to ensure that those who served in the Gulf War would be remembered by future generations of Roughriders.

Vietnam War Memorial

Vietnam War

Donated by the Girl's League 1983

Though the war ended a decade earlier, this stone was donated and dedicated in 1983 by the Girl's League. These ladies decided this was an appropriate action after learning that many Roughriders had served in Vietnam and that many had lost their lives. They did not want those sacrifices to be forgotten, and so they created this project.

The Girl's League was an ambassador program that began in 1943 for students to identify and address local issues important to the school and surrounding neighborhood. Through their research within the community, they recognized the need for this memorial.

World War II and Korean War Memorial

World War II and Korean War

Donated by the Class of 1958

Donated at the time of the Class of 1958's graduation, this was a very emotional project. World War II had heavily impacted the community, and many lives were lost from local families. The Korean War followed soon after, and the the pain was felt again. This class felt that it was their duty to memorialize these sacrifices and create a permanent fixture on campus. This became the first veteran memorial placed at Roosevelt.

During World War II, the student body population declined as many young men withdrew from school to enlist in the military. Many of them did not return home. These young men would have been uncles and cousins to members of the Class of 1958.
